The Late List Reader
by Klon November 16, 2025
Thanks for taking the time to pick up the first issue of the Late List Reader. You might be asking yourself “Klon, what do you mean the FIRST issue? Didn’t you publish four other issues of Late List?” Those would be great questions because I did publish four issues of the now out-of-print zine Late List, but this is the Late List Reader. See the difference? It’s a READER now. Late List was all about video stores and the goofballs that worked in them. I’m very proud of what we did with Late List and all the other zines I put out. I’ve been making zines for a little over a decade now and before that mini-comix. This project started as yet another zine, but I had promised myself after the last one that it was time to do things differently. The last one (The Ghastly Horror Society Compendium) had so many contributions that I had to split it into two volumes. A good problem to have but ZIP ZOP gotta change things up. So what’s next? A book? A glossy full sized magazine? Sounds like a money pit! Besides, I don’t actually know the first thing about publishing or editing or distribution or rights or any of that stuff. After managing a video store then writing about movies and screening movies at our local microcinema I’m pretty much a film culture lifer and I still like to run my mouth about movies so… a a podcast? Scripted, natch. That way I can put things out at my own pace and I won’t need to schedule guests. But some people still like reading little pieces of paper (I do!) so I can put the script out as a zine (that’s what you’re reading now). But since it’s about movies, it would feel silly not to have a video component so there’s also a “video essay” (that’s probably getting taken off of youtube any second now for content and/or copyright violations). So it’s three things at once - a podcast, a zine, a video essay, and I guess I’ll put stuff on a blog too. Oof what am I doing all this for?? For Something Weird Video! That’s why!
When I said this idea originated as a zine, I had the concept for a SWV zine like my past ones where I have an open call for submissions then after a few months (or years) I finally print the sucker up. Except my buddy Scott “Strange Tapes” Miller already did that! And I was a contributor! Scott put out a large sized issue of his Printsploitation zine that was all about SWV with interviews and art and I submitted a few of my Power Profiles. It was really wonderful. Printsploitation was great. You should go find Scott’s Strange Tapes show on YouTube, he does a great job at everything he puts his mind to.
I’d like to thank Lisa Petrucci from Something Weird Video for being a supportive cheerleader of this project as well as the folks at Dr Clean Productions who published my piece that originated the project in their Dr. Clean Magazine. And of course Matt Simpson, the Duke of Podcasting, from the Movie Melt podcast for being a general sounding board, advisor and friend throughout the process.
